How hypnosis can help with your addictions

Hypnotherapy or hypnosis is increasingly gaining credibility in the psychiatric and medical community as a highly effective addiction treatment. Hypnosis is extremely helpful in overcoming long-term addictions and easing the withdrawal symptoms mostly faced by patients in drug addiction rehabs. Under the guidance of a professional addiction counselor, hypnosis has treated some of the extreme cases in drug addictions, through delaying drug relapse and easing drug cravings.

Treatment Process

Hypnosis can never be used as a primary method of treatment in drug addiction. In fact, it always comes as a secondary treatment model, which can assist doctors and other specialists to help the patient overcome the addiction in a rehab.

A drug addiction patient needs to be completely detoxified from the substances in order to benefit from hypnosis. The detox period of each individual varies according to the willpower of the patient, type of drug used, time duration of drug abuse and emotional factors, such as the support of family and friends. In majority of the cases, patients take at least 2 months to completely detoxify from any traces of drugs present in their body.

With the increased usage of hypnosis as an alternative treatment method for addiction, even medical professionals have started offering hypnosis treatments. These professionals are known as hypnotherapists.

A hypnotherapist typically guides an addict into a mental trance state in which a person becomes more prone to accept suggestions and ideas. The hypnosis subject becomes good at problem solving and creativity in this trance-like state. In short, subjects reach such a mental state during hypnosis that they begin forming their own strategies for overcoming their addiction problems.

However, it is extremely important for the subject or addict to personally want to overcome the addiction so that this treatment can work. Patients who are forced into attending hypnosis sessions can barely benefit from it. Hypnosis does not encourage new outlooks or change minds of individuals. Instead, it helps to refine and polish a preexisting mindset.

Is it effective?

It is important to understand that hypnosis is not a magical treatment to enable patients to overcome their addiction overnight. It is particularly used as an effective treatment for relapse prevention and to ease-out the withdrawal symptoms faced by patients during the detox stage at the rehab.

Mental sobriety of the patient is extremely important in order for this treatment to work out positively. High level of concentration is a prerequisite of falling under a hypnotic trance and then building personal strategies to overcome the addiction.
